Every railing and gate quote we write starts with the same question: what metal? It drives the price, the look, the maintenance schedule, and how the piece ages on your property. Here is the honest comparison we give clients on the shop floor.
Mild steel — the workhorse
Mild (carbon) steel is what most custom metalwork in America is built from, and for good reason. It's strong, it welds beautifully, and it's the most cost-effective way to get a fully custom design. If you want tight scrollwork, chunky industrial profiles, or unusual geometry, mild steel gives the fabricator the most freedom — it's the same material family our structural work is built from.
Its one weakness is rust. Bare mild steel will oxidize, so outdoor mild steel lives or dies by its finish — powder coat or a proper paint system at minimum, hot-dip galvanizing underneath for anything exposed to constant moisture. Finished properly, a mild steel railing in Georgia will serve for decades.
- Best for: interior railings, custom designs, budget-conscious exterior work with a quality finish
- Watch out for: skipping the finish conversation — that's where cheap railing fails
Stainless steel — corrosion resistance, clean lines
Stainless steel carries chromium in the alloy, which forms a self-healing oxide layer. That's why it shrugs off rain and humidity without paint. It's the natural choice for cable-rail systems, brushed-metal moderns, and anywhere you want bare metal outdoors — pool surrounds, terraces, coastal properties.
The trade-offs are cost (roughly 1.5–2× mild steel for a comparable design) and a more limited register. Stainless wants to be clean and contemporary; it's not the metal for ornate traditional scrollwork.
- Best for: cable railing, modern exteriors, high-moisture locations, bare-metal finishes
- Watch out for: “tea staining” near pools — specify 316 stainless around chlorine and salt systems
Aluminum — light, modern, low maintenance
Aluminum weighs about a third of what steel does and doesn't rust — it forms a stable oxide instead. That makes it ideal for long balcony runs, rooftop decks where weight matters, and clients who want to genuinely never think about maintenance again. It also polishes like nothing else — the 1957 Avion camper in our portfolio is aluminum brought back to a mirror, panel by panel.
It is softer than steel, so profiles get sized up slightly for the same stiffness, and welding aluminum well is its own discipline — one our welders carry alongside their steel qualifications. Powder coat adheres to it exceptionally well.
- Best for: balconies, decks, pool fencing, modern designs in bright powder-coat colors
- Watch out for: direct contact with steel fasteners — dissimilar metals corrode; details matter
Wrought iron — the classic
True historic wrought iron is rarely produced anymore; what's sold as “wrought iron” today is usually mild steel worked in the traditional ornamental style — hammered textures, collars, scrolls, pickets with forged details. That's the register our bespoke gates and the Victorian fence restoration in our portfolio live in, and it's the right call for classic Southern architecture: estate gates, front porch railing, Juliet balconies.
Because it's steel underneath, the same finish rules apply: powder coat or paint, galvanize when it lives outside full-time.
- Best for: traditional homes, ornamental gates and fencing, historic districts and restorations
- Watch out for: mass-produced hollow “iron-look” panels — forged solid stock looks and lasts completely differently
