Steel doesn't fail in Georgia because it's weak. It fails because water found a way in. The finish is the single biggest factor in how an exterior railing, gate, or frame looks in year ten — which is why finishing is part of our shop, not an afterthought: SP6 blast, shop primer, epoxy, zinc, or hot-dip galvanizing, matched to the exposure.
What powder coating actually is
Powder coating is dry polymer powder applied electrostatically, then baked into a continuous film. Compared to brushed or sprayed paint it's thicker, more uniform, dramatically more chip- and UV-resistant, and available in nearly any color and texture.
The catch: powder coat is a barrier. It protects steel by keeping water off it. If the film gets breached — a deep scratch, a chip from a string trimmer — moisture can creep underneath and rust spreads beneath the finish. Quality prep (blasting, phosphate wash, zinc-rich primer) slows that dramatically, but the principle stands.
What hot-dip galvanizing actually is
Galvanizing dips the fabricated steel into molten zinc at roughly 840°F. The zinc metallurgically bonds to the steel and protects it two ways: as a barrier, and sacrificially — if the coating is scratched to bare steel, the surrounding zinc corrodes first and protects the exposed spot. That's the crucial difference from any paint or powder.
The trade-off is appearance. Fresh galvanizing is spangled bright silver that weathers to matte gray. It's an industrial look — right for a stair-and-walkway system on a rock slope, wrong for a formal front entry.

The best of both: duplex coating
For exterior steel that has to look good and last — pool railings, drive gates, entry canopies, anything near irrigation — we recommend a duplex system: hot-dip galvanize first, then powder coat over it. The zinc handles any breach in the powder; the powder gives you the color and shields the zinc. The combined life typically exceeds the sum of either finish alone, because each layer protects the other.
What we recommend, project by project
- Interior stair rail: blast and powder coat. Done.
- Covered porch railing: powder coat over zinc-rich primer.
- Uncovered deck, pool, or garden rail: duplex (galvanize + powder).
- Drive gates and fencing: duplex — gates take physical abuse and sprinkler spray.
- Structural canopies and exposed frames: duplex or a specified paint system — it's a one-time chance to protect steel you'll never disassemble again.
